Hi, Enjoyed your note! Thank you very much! My parents had a used book store when I was a kid and we attracted a few stamp collectors as customers. One of them, a guy named Bob Libby taught me a lot about stamp collecting. The store was near Dundas and Ossington in downtown Toronto and many days or nights I would take a long walk and look in the many store windows that held a few stamps for sale. I had a paper route and would also caddy at golf clubs, thus I had a few spare bucks to spend on stamps. After all, stamps are not a matter of life or death, they are far more important than that!

Bricklin SV-1 Sports Car - On a Canadian Stamp!

Between 1974 and 1976 this futuristic sports car was built in New Brunswick. Canada issued a stamp in 1996 showing this car (see Scott #1605Y or Unitrade #1605Y).

An August 4, 2009 press release announced a new musical recounting the story of Bricklin - Brickin: The Musical. We understand the play is now taking place in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The artistic team contacted us and asked for a quantity of the Bricklin stamp and we were able to oblige. We wish them good luck!

Canada 1942 20c Corvette Stamp

Take a close look at Canada's Scott/Unitrade #260. It shows a Corvette being built in a shipyard. The Corvette were considered to be the warhorse of the Second World War. Canada's Naval Memorial is the Corvette HMCS Sackville, berthed in Halifax, and is probably the last of these ships. This year National Defense issued a Candian Naval Centennial calendar (1910-2010). A great write up on Corvette's is found on the May page. A wonderful calendar to have!

Canadian Christopher Plummer Nominated for an Academy Award

Canadian actor Christopher Plummer was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his performance as Russian writer Leo Tolstoy in the film The Last Station.

Plummer is the great grandson of Sir John Abbott, past Prime Minister of Canada.

In 1952 Canada issued a stamp to honour Sir John Abbott (Unitrade #318) We have these, and others from the Prime Ministers series in stock. The price for a plate block is $1.50 per block of four (plate one and plate two available) and a single stamp is $0.25.

A New Poem

On December 31, 2009 my wife Jean and I were out for New Years Eve. During the evening we were joined at our table by several people including an old friend of mine - Gordon Arthur Casey, a young man in his 80s. Casey was in the RCNVR during the Second World War serving from August 14, 1941 until August 22, 1945. Though he had many adventures during that time, one of his stories about trucking after the war captured my imagination. On January 1, 2010 I sat down and wrote this poem regarding one of his international trucking experiences. Hope you enjoy it - my friend Casey did.

Casey and the Drive to New Jersey

The trip was most uncertain with a load so big and wide
On highways long and narrow but the truckers must decide

It’s a long way from Ontario to New Jersey and a drive thru Province and State
If the trip could not be made some costly changes would make the buyer wait

One solution might be cutting the load in two
But at a cost of many thousands it made favour with but few

The rules can change along the way and the authorities can cause you grief
A driver with huge driving skill, gift of gab and energy would give some relief

The company felt only one man could do the chore
Casey was his name and he was always successful on all his drives before

One warning truck in front and one behind,
plus enough papers and permits to blow your mind

The big load left with Casey in control of it
Thru Customs and borders where one would hardly think it would fit

In the States Highway Patrol checked him out
But smooth talking Casey got rid of their doubt

Ten miles from the New Jersey border with all going well
One last officer questioned its size and all hope fell

Poor Casey was ordered to enter a truck inspection station
While he only wanted to go onto his destination

But Casey is a lucky man the load on the truck was too big to enter
It would have to be left on the highway outside the center

Officer he strongly argued if something happens to this load out here you will be responsible
A valuable load, so close to the border, please let us continue, you can make it possible
The officer was shaken by possibility of liability he might be taking
Casey get your load across that line before I change the decision I am making
Casey wasted no time in covering the miles
You can believe at the final destination he brought a few smiles

They say all is well
That ends well

The Winnipeg Folk Festival helped give her a start

and thought the Skyline Trail looked mighty fine

She didn’t know that the beasts were out a stalking
While the she was busy walking

Devil Dogs on the Cabot Trail show no mercy

These pictures will show a portion of the large collection I received today from Quebec in 91 large boxes, delivered in a rented truck. The bulk of the collection is covers of the world with strength in USA and Canada. Many are connected with various space flights and rocket tests. Received set of 10 booklets 82c today. Thanks again for the fast service. Please advise how you distinguish between uncoated and coated paper. Thanks.

I replied: Thank you for your question. I keep a silver coin in my pocket – actually an 1812 bank token which is sort of a good luck charm with a hole in it. Stroke silver across the coated pane and it leaves a light dark mark. The set you have is probably marked thus if you look closely. Any piece of silver will do. Stroke it across the uncoated paper and it leaves no mark.

It is interesting to read the article published in the Toronto Star on Sunday January 18, 2009 in the column "A Picture and 1000+ Words" . This, coincidentally, is the same column that featured John Talman back in October 2008. This article is a re-publication of an article written in 1990 when Obama became the first black to be elected president in the 102-year history of the prestigious Harvard Law Review. It is a fascinating history of Obama's life and foreshadows what the future would bring for Barack Obama.

Australia, no, not the stamps of Australia which provide a fascinating story, but the movie Australia directed by Baz Luhrmann. Close to three hours long, it stars the beautiful Nicole Kidman and People's Sexiest Man Alive choice Hugh Jackman. To add to this great movie we have a newcomer, Brandon Walters, who plays the part of an Aboriginal lad Nullah. Hope we see more of Brandon. Wonderful cattle driving scenes in a spectacular country, the start of World War II in the Pacific, romance and social commentary all combine to make this picture not to be missed.

2006 Canadian Forces Snowbirds Stamps

We deal mostly in older issues and the recent issues usually reach us with large amounts of face value. Recently I purchased some of these 51c stamps and noted two upper right imprint blocks. One with white margin cut off at right (to show just the blue part) and one with white portion of margin attached, per the scan above. We would be interested in learning how this happened and if the larger imprint block is scarce.

400th Anniversary of Founding of Quebec as Seen by Paris Match

The National Post of Saturday June 28, 2008 points out that a leading French magazine's special edition on Quebec's 400th Anniversary confused the founding of the city (Quebec) with that of the province (Quebec). Apparently there is not a line in the 30 page special about Quebec City. Instead, they concentrate on Montreal, the rival of Quebec City.

Obviously no stamp collectors were involved or they would remember Canada #96-103 and the May 16, 2008 stamp for the founding of Quebec City.

Extremely Rare British Commonwealth Cover for Sale

Only 24 of this stamp were issued - the figures are found in Stanley Gibbons' catalogue and elsewhere. Thus this is one of the rarest covers in British Commonwealth collecting. The item will be sold in H.R. Harmer Inc. sale of June 6, 2008 - www.hrharmer.com

Canada's Mountie Stamp of 1935

The Unitrade Specialized Catalogue of Canadian Stamps is a wonderful reference book, but it can't list all the knowlege gathered by philatelists over the years. I was lucky enough to find an article by Ronald Tuckwell called "Fortunate Flaws" and published in "The Canadian Magazine" in August 1938. I think you will enjoy his write up on Unitrade #223, the Mountie stamp of 1935. The article was issued just prior to the release of a new set of pictorials in 1938. One comment I can't help repeating regards #223ii, the broken leg variety. This currently lists VF mint at $2200 plus 50% for never hinged. In 1938 the author states "already more than one single copy of it has sold for as high as five dollars!" The low price was 10c from the post office. Click on the article to see a larger version.

Canada's New Braille Stamp

The April 25th Toronto Sun (page 26 - click on the article above for a larger version) shows an enlargement of Canada's first braille stamp. The stamp shows a lady from the waist down, holding a handle on a guide dog's harness. Though the dog is now famous, the article tells us that the dog never passed the rigorous training to be a guide dog. So, we now have a guide dog stamp showing a non-guide dog!! I think the dog should get a second chance to pass the tests!

2006 Canada Post Snowbirds Souvenir Sheet

In 2006 Canada Post issued a pair of stamps plus a souvenir sheet for Canadian Forces Snowbirds (See Unitrade #2159b and #2158-59) If you check the thematic collections list on page 517 of the current Unitrade, they list no. 147 as Snowbirds Stamp and Coin Set - listed at $120.00. The souvenir sheet has a special overprint "Flown by the Snowbirds on 2006-03-27" Only about 25,555 were flown and overprinted like this. One will be sold in our April 2008 sale.

Unitrade #1180c - 80c Peary Caribou - the sheet stamp comes in two different perfs. The scarcer perf. is 14.4 X 13.8 and if you have one of the 1991 Jan/June stamp packs from Canada Post, you should find an example in the pack.

Unitrade #BK88b - New Variety?

The 1985 34c Parliament Buildings 50c Booklet has shown up with what I think is a new variety. These booklets normally have 37 vertical perfs. and are usually 69 ½ cm high. A number exist 72 cm long and while they still have 37 vertical perfs, there is room for at least one more perf. at the bottom on the larger panes. Without the perf. the pane looks partially imperf. at bottom. Differences in pane sizes are noted on Unitrade #BK78a and 78b and 80f but not noted on #BK88b. We are selling these for $15.00 per booklet, plus shipping and taxes (for buyers in Canada)

Queen Elizabeth on Stamps

Near the end of December 2007, Queen Elizabeth II became our oldest ever monarch. By the time you read this, her eldest son Charles will hold the record for the longest wait by an heir to the throne. Victoria's son King Edward VII had held the previous record of waiting, which was 59 years and two months!

The first stamp issued for HRH Elizabeth was Newfoundland Scott #192 issued in 1932. Canada also issued stamps during the 1930s showing Princess Elizabeth. These were a 1c stamp for the 1935 King George V Silver Jubilee issue of six stamps and the 1939 1c Royal Visit stamp which also showed her sister Margaret. In 1947 Princess Elizabeth was featured on a small Canadian stamp #276 for the Royal Wedding to Philip Mountbatten. He would not be featured on a stamp until 1951 when he and Princess Elizabeth appeared on Scott #315. By the way, one f my favourite Canadian Queen Elizabeth stamps is the 1959 Royal Visit stamp #386. From a painting by Pietro Annigoni, it is a beauty!

The stamps are superbly designed and the issues also include souvenir sheets and other special post office offerings. 2008 will complete the cycle of twelve different years. Halloween is a time when most people give candy to kids. On a few occasions we have put little packets of stamps as well as candy into the kids bags. Must make them think! Some kids even came back for more stamps and who knows, it might have turned a few of them into stamp collectors. The world needs more stamp collectors!

Pen Cancels on Stamps

Many 19th century stamps were cancelled with pen cancels. Some have had the pen cancels removed by collectors or others. Put the stamp under an ultra-violet lamp and in most cases the pen cancel will still show up in that light.

Smudge Cancels on Stamps

Annoying smudge cancels on Jubilees, Quebec Tercentenary, etc. - many of them have been cleaned over the years but there are still enough around to keep you busy. If you want to reveal a bit more of the design under the smudge cancel, take an art eraser and gently work at the cancel. In most cases a lot of the dark ink can be removed. Don't rub too strongly - you can damage the stamp. Experiment with cheaper stamps first.

Gum Disturbance on Mint Stamps

You have a mint stamp with light gum disturbance - perhaps caused by a fingerprint? You would prefer to have the gum back to its original state. Hold the stamp in your tongs and breathe on the gum. Don't spit on it - just breathe on it. In many, or even most cases, it will remove the light disturbance. You may wish to experiment with cheaper stamps to start. Please remember that it will not work in all cases.
